Standard Heavy Weight Drill Pipe (HWDP)

Description

Standard heavy weight drill pipe (HWDP) is a new type of drill string component manufactured from solid bars and thick-walled steel tubes. It features extra-long external upset joints at both ends and a central external upset section, combining the functions of drill collars and ordinary drill pipes.
When transitioning from rigid drill collars to flexible standard drill pipes, abrupt cross-section changes will create severe bending stress concentration and easily cause drill string failures. Installing HWDP between drill collars and drill pipes can smooth the stiffness transition, lower stress concentration and reduce downhole tool accidents.
Compared with drill collars, HWDP brings multiple advantages: easier fishing operation, shorter tripping time, convenient transportation, stable hold angle performance for directional wells, and stronger drilling depth capacity of rigs under the same hook load and weight on bit. Standard HWDP has been widely applied in vertical wells and deviated wells worldwide.
